You can design your own coin and have it minted

I'm sure many of you have heard about coinable.com, but for those who didn't know here is the linkyText

I can imagine all the different coins I could make. Hell, you can even make a mood coin that changes colors with heat.

it sure would be neat to see a cast coin out of nitinol...why?

you could flatten it with a hammer...then

tell your friends you have a "shrinky dink" coin

toss it in an oven and watch it return to a coin again

dents and rim bumps would be cool to watch correct themselves under a lil heat too

nitinol is a naval alloy that has shape memory and will return to it's free state under heat...twist it...bend it...hammer it...whatever

but it can't be minted as that removes the free state...if it was minted....under heat it would return to a blank planchet

  • I thought more on the line of making a concept pattern US Coin. It seem these are becoming popular collectibles.

imagine watching a planchet turn into a coin before your eyes in a toaster oven?

    that'd be cool

There are many companies who make these military challenge coins. How many coins do you want?

    Steve

Edited to add... this one is unique. A pattern coin with this one being the only one made. Also, never to be made again. the 741st doesn't exist anymore.

  • I know many companies make coins, but I'm thinking of pattern-concept coins. I just thought it was interesting. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Unfortunately it still takes talent to design a great coin. Seems like that talent died years ago as the mint is having to copy old designs.

    jeffery of coinable,
how close could you do to an original 1909 vdb matte proof except changing the date to 2009?
    would abes bust compare?

There are several companies out there with similar product offerings. I believe many of these are made in China. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, just something to be aware of.

Regarding the possibility of making "pattern" fantasy coins, I think we have all seen some really awful coin "copies" out there that look like a joke compared to the original. Very few people would have the skill to make a "2009" fantasy proof Lincoln cent and have it look close enough to be interesting. But I'm going to give it a shot ! My plan is actually to make a 2009-o VDB fantasy coin next year. Why the "o" you might ask ? Because it is also the 100th anniversary of the last New Orleans coinage.
  • In coin reproduction, duplicate sizes of actual currency can not be achieved. They must be either larger or smaller and not the same size as any other currency.

Size would determine a cost for the project. We offer sizes ranging from .0800 inch to 4 inches.

Prices are determined by several factors:
    Quantity:
    Size:
    Metal type or finish:
    Any additional features:

we should gather interested lincoln people to have fantasy 2009's made as exact as possible and do like the fullstep nickel club did as the mint is letting us down
